The hump in the background is the original "Arranmore Cemetery". The landlord would not let them bury their dead on the island and finally allowed the islanders that spot after so many began dying from disease and famine. It is said that there are over 1000 people buried in the mound. The body would be wrapped in linen, lied on the rock shelf and bordered with rocks. Then the people would scoop sand from the shore to cover the body.
